Nurses to stage walkout next month as Britain braces for Christmas strike chaos

Image
Thousands of nurses will stage a walkout in a row over pay as Britain braces for a series of strikes in the run up to Christmas. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) on Thursday announced its members would stage their first national strike on December 15 and 20. The protest action will take place in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The move comes as members of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union announced a series of 48-hour strikes next month and in January by its members at Network Rail and 14 train companies – and an overtime ban over Christmas and New Year, likely to cause travel chaos over the festive period. The RCN has rejected the “final” offer and is pressing ahead with a series of strikes in the coming weeks, including on Black Friday and on December 24, Christmas Eve. The nursing group said it was calling strikes after the UK government had turned down its offer of formal, detailed negotiations as an alternative to industrial action. Picket lines were stationed outs

Ex-South Korean leader plans to give up dogs from North Korea's Kim

Image
South Korea's former president Moon Jae-in said on Monday he plans to give up a pair of dogs sent by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a gift following their 2018 summit, citing a lack of support from his successor. Mr Moon has raised the white Pungsan dogs, named Gomi and Songgang, since their arrival in the South. He took them to his personal residence after his term ended in May. The dogs are legally categorised as state property belonging to the presidential archives, but Mr Moon's office said he was entrusted as their caretaker under consultations with the archives and the interior ministry, an unprecedented decision. The agencies had sought a legislative amendment to facilitate the move, including financial support. But that effort fell apart due to "unexplained opposition" from the administration of incumbent President Yoon Suk-yeol, Mr Moon's office said. "The presidential office seems to be negative toward entrusting the management of the Pungsan do

China opposes British minister’s planned visit to Taiwan

China’s foreign ministry said on Monday that Britain must stop any form of official exchanges with Taiwan, following plans by a British minister to visit the self-governed island, which China claims, for trade talks. Taiwan’s authorities need to stop colluding with foreign forces, said Zhao Lijian, a spokesman at the Chinese foreign ministry, at a regular media briefing.

Missile tests were practice to attack South Korea, US

Image
North Korea’s military said Monday its recent barrage of missile tests were practices to “mercilessly” strike key South Korean and US targets such as air bases and operation command systems with a variety of missiles that likely included nuclear-capable weapons. The North’s announcement underscored leader Kim Jong Un’s determination not to back down in the face of his rivals’ push to expand their military exercises. But some experts say Kim also used their drills as an excuse to modernize his nuclear arsenal and increase his leverage in future dealings with Washington and Seoul. North Korea fired dozens of missiles and flew warplanes toward the sea last week — triggering evacuation alerts in some South Korean and Japanese areas — in protest of massive US-South Korean air force drills that the North views as an invasion rehearsal. US and South Korean officials responded they would further enhance their joint training events and warned the North that the use of nuclear weapons would resu

Planet Earth: 8 billion humans and dwindling resources

Image
NEW YORK: Are eight billion humans too many for planet Earth? As we reach this milestone on November 15, most experts say the bigger problem is the over-consumption of resources by the wealthiest residents. “Eight billion people, it is a momentous milestone for humanity,” said United Nations Population Fund chief Natalia Kanem, hailing an increase in life expectancy and fewer maternal and child deaths. “Yet, I realize this moment might not be celebrated by all. Some express concerns that our world is overpopulated. I am here to say clearly that the sheer number of human lives is not a cause for fear.” So, are there too many of us for Earth to sustain? Many experts say that this is the wrong question. Instead of the fear of overpopulation, we should focus on the over-consumption of the planet’s resources by the wealthiest among us. “Too many for whom, too many for what? If you ask me, am I too many? I don’t think so,” Joel Cohen of Rockefeller University’s Laboratory of Populations told

Fire, building collapse injures 20 people in Iraq’s capital

BAGHDAD: More than two dozen people were injured, including the head of Iraq’s civil defense directorate, when a commercial building in the capital caught fire and then collapsed Sunday, authorities and the state news agency reported. The official Iraqi News Agency said the civil defense director, Maj. Gen. Kadhim Bohan, and some firefighters were were among those injured when the burning building collapsed. No deaths were reported. No information was immediately available on the cause of the blaze. Brig. Gen. Qusai Younis, director of civil defense for the Al-Rusafa district of Baghdad, told The Associated Press that at least 28 people had been injured. He said two of the three stories in the building, which contained warehouses storing flammable materials such as perfume, collapsed due to the fire. The civil defense announced late Sunday evening that the fire had been fully extinguished and first responders were searching for missing people at the scene. On Oct. 29, a gas tanker expl

US midterm elections: Biden, Obama and Trump woo Pennsylvania

Image
US President Joe Biden, Democratic superstar Barack Obama and Republican firebrand Donald Trump all converged on Saturday on Pennsylvania to push their parties to the finishing line in a race Mr Biden said marks a "defining" moment for America's democracy. The battle of the serving and two former presidents marked the start of a final crescendo before Tuesday when Americans will decide who controls Congress during the last two years of Mr Biden's first term. Polls put Republicans well ahead in the fight for the House of Representatives and also show them gaining momentum in the Senate races as voters, riled up by culture wars, seek to take out frustration over four-decades-high inflation and rising illegal immigration. With Pennsylvania one of the handful of swing states that will decide the overall balance of power, both sides brought out their big guns — and the contrasts were dramatic. Mr Biden and Mr Obama rallied in Philadelphia alongside Senate hopeful John Fett

Why Cop27 is critical for India to meet its green energy goals and raise funding

Image
India has made great strides in ramping up its use of green energy, but the country is falling short of its targets. To help meet its renewable energy goals, New Delhi is pushing for greater financial support from wealthier nations at the Cop27 climate summit, which began on Sunday in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt. “India would need committed help to meet its targets,” says Shailendra Singh Rao, founder and managing director of Creduce, a climate change and carbon asset management services company in Ahmedabad in the western India state of Gujarat. “Climate finance is to be paid by developed countries — a sum of $100 billion per year — to developing countries. This was committed way back in Cop15. Not a single year [has] the target has been matched.” India will require $223bn of investment to meet its solar and wind installations by 2030, according to a report by BloombergNEF. The South Asian country has set a target of 175 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by the end of this year, with
