Barr: GOP has ‘big opportunity’ to move past Trump in 2024

Image
Former Attorney General William Barr said Thursday that the GOP needs to elect someone other that former President Trump to be party’s presidential nominee in 2024. Barr, who served as the nation’s top prosecutor under Trump, was asked on Newsmax if he would vote for the former president in 2024. “I don’t think he should be our nominee — the Republican Party nominee,” Barr responded. “And I think Republicans have a big opportunity — it would be a big mistake to put him forward,” he added.  Trump and Barr’s relationship crumbled after Barr refuted claims that the 2020 election was tainted by widespread voter fraud. In his memoir “One Damn Thing After Another,” Barr said that Trump had  “lost his grip” after the 2020 presidential election. “He stopped listening to his advisers, became manic and unreasonable, and was off the rails,” Barr wrote. “He surrounded himself with sycophants, including many whack jobs from outside the government, who fed him a steady diet of comforting bu...

Donald Trump sues Hillary Clinton for claiming 2016 Russian collusion

Image
Donald Trump on Thursday sued his rival in the 2016 US presidential election, Hillary Clinton, and several other Democrats, alleging that they tried to rig that election by tying his campaign to Russia. The lawsuit covers a long list of grievances the former Republican president repeatedly aired during his four years in the White House after beating Ms Clinton, and comes at a time when he continues to falsely claim that his 2020 election defeat by Democratic President Joe Biden was the result of widespread fraud. Former US president Donald Trump's lawsuit covers a long list of grievances he repeatedly aired during his four years in the White House. “Acting in concert, the defendants maliciously conspired to weave a false narrative that their Republican opponent, Donald J. Trump, was colluding with a hostile foreign sovereignty,” Mr Trump alleged in a 108-page lawsuit filed in a federal court in Florida. The suit alleges “racketeering” and a “conspiracy to commit injurious falsehoo...

Texas judge rules Biden administration can't exempt migrant children from Trump-era order

Image
A Texas judge on Friday ruled that the Biden administration cannot exempt unaccompanied migrant children from a Trump-era order, a decision that could lead U.S. Border Patrol to turn children away.  During the early part of the pandemic, former President Trump launched Title 42, a controversial public health policy that would allow the U.S. to immediately expel migrants who came to the border. The Biden administration has continued to operate under that order, but carved out an exception from unaccompanied migrant children. However, Texas District Court Judge Mark Pittman, a Trump appointee, ruled against the Title 42 exemption, according to CBS News.  Pittman said that the Biden administration did not thoroughly justify the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention orders that codified the exclusion of unaccompanied minors from Title 42, calling them "arbitrary and capricious," CBS reported. Pittman also argued that Texas had been financially hit as a result...

White House chief of staff tries to pump up worried Senate Democrats

Image
White House chief of staff Ron Klain promised Senate Democrats that President Biden will deliver an uplifting and inspiring State of the Union address that will highlight his efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and respond to rising costs.   Klain’s goal in addressing the Senate Democratic caucus in person on Capitol Hill appeared to be to give lawmakers something to positive to focus on instead of the president’s sagging poll numbers.   In fact, senators said there was no discussion of Biden’s weak public approval rating in battleground states that will decide in this year’s election which party will control the Senate in 2023.   Klain told senators that Biden’s speech to a joint session of Congress next month will tout the president’s accomplishments from last year, which many Democrats believe are being undersold, and set a clear agenda for the rest of the year.   But the conversation, while very positive, was also very general and se...

Judge rules Trump, children must comply with NY AG's subpoena for testimony

Image
Former President Trump and his two eldest children must comply with the New York attorney general's subpoenas for their testimony in an investigation into the family's business practices, a New York state judge ruled on Thursday. Judge Arthur Engoron denied the Trumps' effort to quash the subpoenas, rejecting their arguments that New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) is conducting a politically motivated investigation that is depriving them of their constitutional rights. "In the final analysis, a State Attorney General commences investigating a business entity, uncovers copious evidence of possible financial fraud, and wants to question, under oath, several of the entities' principals, including its namesake. She has the clear right to do so," Engoron wrote.   The judge dismissed Trump's arguments that James's various comments about the former president, including campaign vows to investigate him, undermine the legal basis for the...
