Thousands of nurses will stage a walkout in a row over pay as Britain braces for a series of strikes in the run up to Christmas. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) on Thursday announced its members would stage their first national strike on December 15 and 20. The protest action will take place in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The move comes as members of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union announced a series of 48-hour strikes next month and in January by its members at Network Rail and 14 train companies – and an overtime ban over Christmas and New Year, likely to cause travel chaos over the festive period. The RCN has rejected the “final” offer and is pressing ahead with a series of strikes in the coming weeks, including on Black Friday and on December 24, Christmas Eve. South Korea's former president Moon Jae-in said on Monday he plans to give up a pair of dogs sent by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a gift following their 2018 summit, citing a lack of support from his successor. Mr Moon has raised the white Pungsan dogs, named Gomi and Songgang, since their arrival in the South. He took them to his personal residence after his term ended in May. The dogs are legally categorised as state property belonging to the presidential archives, but Mr Moon's office said he was entrusted as their caretaker under consultations with the archives and the interior ministry, an unprecedented decision. The agencies had sought a legislative amendment to facilitate the move, including financial support. But that effort fell apart due to "unexplained opposition" from the administration of incumbent President Yoon Suk-yeol, Mr Moon's office said. China’s foreign ministry said on Monday that Britain must stop any form of official exchanges with Taiwan, following plans by a British minister to visit the self-governed island, which China claims, for trade talks. Taiwan’s authorities need to stop colluding with foreign forces, said Zhao Lijian, a spokesman at the Chinese foreign ministry, at a regular media briefing.
