Trump, Modi Signal Progress in India-US Trade Talks
India and the US hint at easing trade tensions as leaders reaffirm partnership.
India and the United States appear to be moving closer to resolving their
trade differences, with both leaders signaling optimism about ongoing
negotiations.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump
announced that discussions were continuing to address trade barriers between
the two nations. He expressed confidence that the negotiations would reach a
successful conclusion for both sides.
“I am pleased to announce that India and the
United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the trade
barriers between our two Nations. I look forward to speaking with my very good
friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks,” Trump posted on Truth
Social.
Responding hours later, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi echoed the sentiment of partnership. “India and the US are close
friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will
pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.
We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our
people,” Modi wrote on X.
The exchange comes just weeks after the US
imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian products, sparking concerns among Indian
exporters. Industry groups in India have warned of possible job losses if
tariffs remain in place.
Despite these challenges, the positive
statements from both leaders suggest that a resolution may be within reach.
Analysts say progress in the trade talks could boost economic cooperation,
benefiting industries in both nations.
